South Florida: Hit and Run Incident May be Hate Crime

Yesterday WSVN Channel 7, Fox's affiliate in South Florida, broadcasted a story about two Jewish Girls who were victims of what the North Miami Beach Police Department calls a hit and run incident. The girls, students at Bais Yaakov School in North Miami Beach, claim a driver intentionally tried to run them over after recognizing they were Jewish. One of the students, 15-year-old Basha Gerstenfeld, was injured in the incident. Another student, Johana Navarro, escaped uninjured.

At the end of the broadcast, a call went out for anybody with information to come forward and provide information that could help solve the case. The broadcast provided a description of the vehicle. No description of the suspect was provided.

And yet, that seemed rather odd. Miss Gerstenfeld claimed that the man was looking at them when he tried to run them over. Now, if Miss Gerstenfeld could see the man looking at them, would it be possible that she took a good enough look at him to provide a description to the Police? But perhaps she was too scared to be able to ascertain the man's appearance--perhaps.

Looking for an answer, I called the North Miami Beach Police Department's information desk. A female police officer answered; I asked whether a description of the suspect in the case was available. She said a description of the vehicle was available, but put me on hold to see whether more information was available. I was held for about ten minutes, at which point she asked me to call later. I did so, was put in hold again, and finally told that no description of the suspect was available.

That is the kind of answer that does not answer the question at all. Information may be unavailable for several reasons--such that the Police Department has decided not to release it. Two questions remained unanswered:

1. Did Miss Gerstenfeld and/or Miss Navarro provide a description of the suspect?

2. If they did so, why didn't the North Miami Beach Police Department release said description?

We'll see whether one or both questions can be answered.

I am asking my self one question. How many more hate crimes like this one go unreported every year? I would not be surprised if the number is large.
