Austria: Muslim Terror Attack Foiled - Man Arrested
News from USA Today, AFP, Associated Press and View London:
In Vienna, Austria around noon today, a man carrying a rucksack apparently filled with grenades and nails, and also Islamic literature, has been arrested. He tried to enter the US Embassy in Boltzmanngasse, but the nails set off the metal detector alarm, and he tried to flee. He dropped the bag (pictured) in Pfluggasse in the 9th district of Vienna, and was arrested.
The man was a 42-year old from Bosnia-Herzogovina, who had been living in the province of Lower Austria, which surrounds Vienna. He is said to have a poor grasp of German, and has only made "confused statements" to police.
Doris Edelbacher of the Vienna security and counter-terrorism bureau said the rucksack had two grenade-like objects. It also had a kilogram (2.2 pounds) of nails. She said: "There were a lot of nails in that bag. Had it exploded, it would have had an enormous shrapnel effect."
The area around Pfluggasse was cordoned off until late today.
AP reports that last month three Arab individuals in their 20s were arrested after a video was posted online in March, warning that there would be terror attacks upon Austria if Germany did not withdraw troops from Afghanistan. One of these men was released a few days after his arrest, with no charges made.
On Friday, the Interior Ministry announced that an online posting gave a list of politicians who were potentially subject to attacks. These politicians have been notified, but are not thought to have been in danger.
