US: Black Muslims' Bakery Raided, Reporter Killed

The sad and sorry saga of the Black Muslims of Oakland, California, led to another episode earlier today, when their bakery, "Your Muslim Bakery" was raided by SWAT teams from Oakland and Freemantle police. We last reported on the Black Muslims, an offshoot of the Nation of Islam with "loyalty" to Elijah Muhammad (believer in spaceships and aliens) on April 29, 2006. It was at this time that Yusuf Bey IV, the son of Yusuf Bey senior, was charged with attempted murder. 20-year old Bey had driven his BMW into a bouncer from a strip joint from which he and his friends had been ejected for harassing the woen inside.

Yusuf Bey senior had, before his death of stomach cancer in 2003, run a TV show on cable, entitled "True Solutions". Here he expounded the incoherent and racist beliefs of Elijah Muhammad, who had been the leader of the Nation of Islam. Yusuf Bey senior echoed these rantings, suggesting that the white race was created by an evil scientist named Yaqub. Following Yusuf Bey senior's death, his "heirs" became involved in a struggle amongst themselves to take over the financial interests of the group.

According to NBC11 News, this morning the SWAT teams were present while police served warrants for "serious violent felonies including murder, robbery and kidnapping". 19 people at Your Black Muslim Bakery were arrested, including Yusuf Bey IV, the wayward "leader" of the Black Muslims. The arrests happened while seven blocks were roped off, and apparently were the result of an investigation that had gone on for months.

Yesterday morning before 7.30 am 58-year old journalist Chauncey Bailey, editor of the Oakland Post, was shot dead in downtown Oakland. Mr Bailey was shot several times by a lone gunmen wearing dark clothing and headgear, in what has been described by police spokesman Roland Holmgren as a "targeted killing". Mr Bailey was traveling to work when he was killed.

Whether the murder of Chauncey Bailey is connected with the arrest warrants handed out at the "Your Muslim Bakery" is not yet clear, though he has written on the Oakland Black Muslims.

Yusuf Bey IV, arrested this morning, has a history of violence. I wrote last year: "Although he is now only 20 years old, Yusuf Bey IV was already on his way to becoming a hardened criminal. He is currently awaiting trial on a number of charges. These, and his attending strip clubs, give to the lie to his self-proclaimed Muslim "piety", and his condemning of the Yemeni Muslim store-owners for their hypocrisy for selling alcohol. He recently said of these: "In their home countries they'd be killed for selling alcohol."

Last year, in Solano County, he tried to get credit finance for purchase of a vehicle, using someone else's identification. He is awaiting a trial for charges of grand theft of a vehicle, obtaining property under false pretenses, and "other counts".

He is awaiting trial in connection with incidents which happened on the evening of Wednesday, November 23 (2005), when a group of a dozen or so well-dressed black men entered stores selling liquor in Oakland, and began to smash up the property within. The black men told the owners of the San Pablo Liquor stare and the New York Market not to sell alcohol to black men as they rampaged.

In the early hours of Monday 27 November, another shop, owned by a Yemeni Muslim, was set alight. Later that day, the store clerk was found locked in the trunk of a car in the parking lot of a branch of Safeway in El Cerrito."

On March 9 this year, I published the fourth part of a series of articles on the Nation of Islam in Family Security Matters. In this, I mentioned Yusuf Bey senior and the relationship of his "Black Muslims" to the Nation of Islam as led by Louis Farrakhan:

Born Joseph H. Stevens in Greeneville, Texas, in 1935, Bey (pictured left) moved with his parents to Oakland at the age of 5. He joined the US Air Force at age 17, and after four years he was honourably discharged. A qualified cosmetologist, Bey ran beauty salons in Oakland Santa Barbara, before opening a bakery in Santa Barbara in 1968 which later became "Your Black Muslim Bakery". He became involved with the Nation of Islam in 1964, and in 1971 moved his bakery to the East Bay. The bakery sold produce free of artificial colorants, with no refined sugar, fats or preservatives.

Bey had a weekly cable show called True Solutions in which he gave a platform to Elijah Muhammad's views. He even ran for the position of Mayor of Oakland. He died on September 30, 2003 of colon cancer, having established an empire running housing, a school, a security firm and retail businesses, including Your Black Muslim Bakery. At the time of his death, he was engaged in a legal battle with a woman who claimed he had first raped her in 1982 when she was 13. She claimed she had been sexually abused by Yusuf Bey since the age of 10.

As members of Bey's family vied for the position of successor, violence broke out. On February 27, Waajid Aljawwaad Bey, president and CEO of the bakery vanished. His rotting corpse was later found in a shallow grave in the Oakland Hills. In June 2005, Bey's adopted son John was wounded by a gunman in an ambush, and on October 25, Yusuf's 24-year old son Antar Bey was shot dead at a gas station. 19-year old Yusuf Bey IV appeared to have taken over the leadership - he was indicted for smashing up Muslim-owned liquor stores in Oakland, events which happened a month after Antar Bey was killed. One store was torched, and an employee was locked in the trunk of a car. The tactic of wrecking premises had been employed under the leadership of Bey senior - in 1994 a rival laundry had been trashed by Black Muslims.

In January 2006, Yusuf Bey IV said: "If you say you're a Muslim, you should have the action of a Muslim. If you say your going to be a Muslim and an follower the Mohammed you should have the actions of following Mohammed, not selling drugs or selling alcohol, or selling things in your store that's not good for our people. That's killing our people."

As an example of a good Muslim, Bey is seriously wanting - indicted on a grand theft auto charge, he attended strip joints and was indicted in April 2006 for attempted murder.

This article that I wrote on the Nation of Islam received this truly bizarre response on July 23 from an individual calling himself "Shafiq Muhammad Shabazz" who claimed to have known Yusuf Bey senior. I ignored it at the time, but by reproducing it in full, it can give readers a measure of the mindset of some of those associated with the "Black Muslims".

I read your article on the NOI with great interest and I see you seem to have and know all of the players. I see you are a British based writer... I do hope my letter gets to you. I am very happy to see your article and what you have done as far research on the nation called ISLAM.

All of these men I know and knew personally, and there is no greater force on the planet earth, because it all belongs to us anyway. Oh right now your running it as a people, but your falling like a brick... And there is no other greater force on the planet earth to fill that void than none other than the black man in America...... Oh I feel so good to hear your fowl things you say about my leaders and teachers. This way I will feel nothing for the rapid decline of western civilization. You said nothing of the ill effects of slavery, and the burning raped and murder done to my black people from 1555 to 2007, Oh your mouth is shut tight my friend.. Since you are a base writer, your story about my leaders and teacher's is baseless. You should try and find out where you and your people really came from, but you already know that..
