Spain: Six Islamists Jailed

On Monday May 28 the Spanish interior ministry revealed that 16 Muslims were arrested from locations in Barcelona, Aranjuez (south of Madrid) and in Malaga on the Costa del Sol. Most were from Algeria, with two from Morocco.

Yesterday, according to Associated Press via Washington Post, Daily Times and Forbes, six of the individuals were jailed at the National Court in Madrid, on provisional charges of belonging to a terrorist group.

Jude Baltasar Garzon, who had ordered the arrests on Monday, freed six individuals. Four individuals were released on bail recognizance of $4,036 and two were told to appear before a court on a weekly basis.

The leaders of the cell which was said to recruit jihadists to fight abroad were alleged to be Abdelaziz Houari Mellas and Mostafa Aztout. These were among the six who were provisionally imprisoned.
