Book Review: Milestones
It is hard to believe a book can be written that contains the essence of pure evil. But such a book exists. It is titled Milestones*, by Sayyid Qutb.
The book is an attempt to explain the crisis of Islam--why were Muslims, once powerful, are now weak. Qutb claims this has happened because there is no real, existent Islam; all societies now (at the time of his writing) are living in "ignorance of the divine guidance". The corollary being that all "Muslim" societies are not Muslim at all.
Qutb's solution to the crisis of Islam--stop me if you have heard this one before--is yet more Islam. His specific plan is to have Islam take root in a society (take over a country) and then after recreating "real Islam" use Jihad and Da'wa to unify the Islamic world, then "unify" the whole World under the banner of Islam.
This is standard Islamic daydreaming, true. But the devil really is in the details. Mr. Qutb explains, for example, how Islam is a source of liberation from the domination of other men--that is, complete slavery--is preferred to imperfect liberty. He also helpfully explains how Muslims are "liberated" from, say, the tyranny of family, nation, and tribe, and how every bond ought to be broken in the name of Islam. And this is called good.
So, that's why I call this book pure evil; it manages to present a case in which the destruction of the human spirit is held out as the highest good. A Christian might call this "the Sin against the Holy Spirit", the only unforgivable sin.
Milestones is hard reading; not hard to read, mind you, but hard reading—emotionally wrenching, exhausting. Still, I urge readers to consider reading this book nonetheless. It will help you understand the enemy like no other book this size would. And that should be enough for those who want to know.
* No link is provided because the book is sold by an Islamic outfit. Please check your local libraries.
