Pakistan: Islamist Assassin Gets Death Sentence
On February 20 last month, a Muslim fanatic shot a Pakistani woman minister in the head and shoulder. The minister, 37-year old Zilla Huma Usman (pictured) was a minister for social welfare in Punjab province. She had two sons and was married to a doctor. She also ran a small fashion design business in Gujranwala. She was attacked during a brief power cut while attending the Muslim League House in Gujranwala. She was taken by helicopter to Lahore General Hospital, but died shortly after she arrived.
Her killer, Mohammed Sarwar, was an extremist Muslim who has been described in some accounts as an imam. He had said at the time to a TV crew: "I have no regrets. I just obeyed Allah's commandment... I will kill all those women who do not follow the right path, if I am freed again." He admitted he had killed the woman because he did not believe female politicians should exist in Islam.
Raja Basharat, Punjab's Law Minister, said then: "He is basically a fanatic. He is against the involvement of women in politics and government affairs. He considers it contrary to the teachings of Allah for a woman to become a minister or a ruler. That's why he committed this action.
He had already been implicated in four actual murders and two attempted murders in Gujranwala. He had been released in relation to these previous cases for "insufficient evidence". He worked as a stone-mason.
Yesterday, 40-year old Sarwar was sentenced to death by a court in Gujranwala.
A court official said: "Judge Tariq Iftikhar has sentenced Sarwar to death on two counts, one for the murder of Zil-e-Huma and the other for spreading terrorism by the action."
He was additionally given a two-year jail sentence and was fined 10,000 rupees ($165) for possessing an illegal weapon. Sarwar showed no reaction when the sentence was passed.
Sarwar was educated at a madrassa and was a father of nine children.
