UK: Muslim Sauna Surprise
A bizarre story from yesterday's Sun newspaper. When most people go to a sauna, they strip off completely, using a towel to cover their modesty. Some more modest individuals may wear trunks or a bikini, but such people are the minority unless the sauna is mixed.
At the David Lloyd Leisure center in Oxford on Tuesday, a woman wearing an abaya and headscarf entered the mixed sauna. She stayed for ten minutes, and then decided to take a swim, still fully clothed in Muslim robes, in the swimming pool.
Though the attire was entirely inappropriate, no staff member dared to stop her or question her. A man who was in the sauna said: "The pool attendant said she was allowed to wear this due to her religious customs. It was just political correctness gone completely barmy. I told the manager that it was my custom to attend saunas naked, as they do in Sweden, and said I trusted he would find that equally acceptable. But to be serious, this is a question of hygiene, not religious rights."
The manager of the David Lloyd Leisure Center, Liam MacGilp told the Sun that pool and sauna attendants have been told of the company policy regarding dress - robes or outdoor garments will not be allowed.
The woman apparently changed into a dry set of robes after her ten-minute swim.
After sweating into robes and then jumping into a public swimming pool, the issue of hygiene is paramount. Additionally, there is a risk of drowning while weighted down with clothing.
