UK: Muhammad Printed, Everybody Apologizes

With thanks to reader DK, who observes; "the article below suggests Cambridge University is the Dhimmi of the week!" College sorry for printing cartoon of Muhammad

A 19-year-old Cambridge University student has been moved to a safe house after causing "widespread distress" by printing offensive material in a college magazine.

The second-year maths and physics student faces being sent down after publishing a cropped copy of the cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad and offensive comments in last week's edition of Clareification, a student flysheet distributed within Clare College.

The cartoon, first published by the Danish newspaper Jyllandsposten in 2005, prompted protests from Muslims world-wide last year and led to at least four deaths. It has been printed only three times in Britain.

The offending edition of Clareification, a satirical weekly, first came to the university's attention on Tuesday, after complaints by Muslims and nonMuslims about the back page, which, under the title "lookalikes of the week", featured a cartoon of Muhammad next to a picture of the president of the Union of Clare Students.

The thing that "gets me" about the story is the unintentional irony. The first paragraph claims the offending student caused "widespread distress." And yet it was him who had to run to a safe house.

Safe house? That's where they moved Salman Rushdie. That's where they put people on witness protection programs who are in danger from violent criminals. And now, that's where they put a 19 year old student who has done nothing wrong because his life is in danger from mainstream islam.

I am shocked that this student feels he has to hide in fear of losing his life over this in mybastions country!!
I can't believe we've let muslim extremists cower us even in what should be bastions of open discource like our top universities.
Will senior academics or administrators at Cambridge speak up about this and defend the student? I doubt it because we all live in fear of muslim extremists here in multicultural Britain.

It's high time you Brits picked up your balls and started fighting back. If this behaviour keeps up, they will actually succeed where Hitler failed.

Cambridge University - C S Lewis must be turning in his grave. What is all this Islam, Islam, Islam? What has happened to the clubs and debating societies, even the radio broadcasts, where people could learn about and discuss christianity? People must get off their secular bums and fight religion with religion.

Don't rely on your politicians and churchmen. They are too busy looking for an Islam Free Zone they can move to with their families and friends when things cut up rough.

Remembering C S Lewis, one of his famous examples of logic concerns Augustine's argument that Christ was either 'God or a bad man':

'I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: "I'm ready to accept Jesus as a a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God." This is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon, or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.'

This is serious stuff. Can Islam answer it?

No Jude: it's you who has not left that open to us, and I can see not one good reason for going along with you.

Where do you stand on Socrates?

The freedom of speech is preserved, so long as no one dares use it? I wonder if George Orwell studied islam.

let me guess:

The full fee-paying Arabs from the Gulf states and Saudi Arabia must not be 'offended'- despicable cowardice and shortsighted economical gain by the Cambridge business masters over the future of civilization and the freedom of expression, -pathetic, but this is our world today...

It's clear that Islam itself is offensive to any decent and rational person. Cambridge should look into this offense.
