UK: Archbishop Says Islamists Are Like Criminals
Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, has been drawing large numbers of young people to his services, and he appears to be a very popular figure in the Anglican church. He has been one of the few voices in the Church of England who has sought to project British values as being something to uphold, rather than to deride. Derision of Britishness is the natural consequence of multiculturalism, it seems.
In November 2005, Ugandan-born Sentamu spoke out against multiculturalism. He has been forthright in condemning the BBC for its refusal to criticize any aspect of Islam. In November last year he said of the BBC's reporting of Christians: "They can do to us what they dare not do to the Muslims. We are fair game because they can get away with it. We don't go down there and say, 'We are going to bomb your place.' That is not in our nature." He also blamed the "chattering classes" for undermining Britain's traditional vales, which were rooted in Christianity.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, the Most Rev and Rt Hon John Sentamu has once again been forthright, here condemning the extremists of Islam as " no better than criminals". He said there was no excuse for killing: "It doesn't matter what god you worship - if your god is sending you to maim and kill people, I say to myself, 'what kind of a god is that?'."
He said: "Some people talk about radicalised young Muslims. I think that gives them a glamour they actually shouldn't have. For me, they are people with evil intentions, breaking the law. And if they are breaking the law, they should be dealt with as law-breakers, not as people who for some strange reason have been given some kind of political theological ideology. If you are in Britain and you are British, you should really cherish the traditions that are here."
"What I am not going to accept is that suddenly, overnight, people use the war in Iraq as an excuse to maim and kill other people. I don't want to accept that the evil in another person invariably should breed evil in me. If you don't subscribe to the things that make Britain, you are going to be in trouble. It is the upholding of British law that is the most important thing. We have to make sure that people are making their home here and together we want to build a big enough tent to include everybody."
Sentamu has been scheduled by Rowan WIlliams, Archbishop of Canterbury, to be present at a meeting of primates at Dar-es Salaam in Tanzania, which lasts for five days and is due to start on February 15. The Telegraph states that some of the delegates may try to bar Sentamu from attending this summit, as Williams has already made a decision to send John Sentamu as a representative of the Church of England, without consultation. As Archbishop of York, John Sentamu is the second most important figure in the CofE hierarchy, but may find himself being used as a pawn in the politicking by factions within the wider Anglican church.

John Sentamu is the only archbishop that I can recall in the last thirty years, to have stood up for his Christian beliefs and for the Gospel. What a pity that there are not more like him within the Anglican Church to speak out on such issues of great importance. The archbishop, a former Ugandan high court judge, has experienced life under the tyrannical dictatorship of Idi Armin. Perhaps this has given him an awareness as to the problems we face in this self-loathing, guilt ridden so called multicultural Britain of today.
Let's see if the pagan practising Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, distances himself from his colleague's remarks.
