UK: Muslim Cartoon Protester Found Guilty
News from the Telegraph and the BBC:
31-year old Abdul Rahman Saleem, a father of five children, was found guilty of racial incitement by a court at the Old Bailey yesterday, following a four-day trial. He was one of a handful of people who were arrested in connection with the illegal protest outside the Danish Embassy in Sloane Square, west London, on February 3 last year. the police had then been criticized, as no arrests had been made at that time.
300 people had gathered, with many holding placards with statements such as "Behead those who insult Islam", "Europe. Take some lessons from 9/11", "Europe you will pay. Demolition is on its way", "Europe you will pay. Your extermination is on its way," "Slay those who insult Islam," "Butcher those who insult Islam". The protests were about the Danish cartoons of Mohammed, founder of Islam
Saleem, who lives in Poplar, Tower Hamlets, east London, was arrested on March 15 and was charged with "using words likely to stir up racial hatred". Saleem is an IT worker for British Telecom.
Anjem Choudary, former deputy leader of the Islamist group Al-Muhajiroun, was arrested on that day, along with Abdul Mudid, a member of the Saviour/Sect. On July 4, Choudary was given a trivial fine for organizing the illegal demonstration.
Three others were charged on similar counts as Saleem - Omar Zaheer, 26 (charged under the Public Order Act), Umran Javed from Birmingham and Mizanur Rahman.
On November 9, Mizanur Rahman was found guilty of inciting racial hatred, but a jury could not decide if he was guilty of inciting murder. At the start of Rahman's trial, on November 2 Muslim demonstrators attacked a cameraman and a policeman outside the Old Bailey, and four were arrested.
On January 5, Umran Javed was found guilty of soliciting murder. Omar Zaheer and Abdul Muhid are still awaiting trial. Muhid, who has a reputation for physical violence has been in custody since his arrest in March.
Abdul Saleem's lawyer Rock Tansey asked the Old Bailey judge yesterday to grant his client bail. The judge, Brian Barker, said: "I am not prepared in the circumstances of this case to grant bail." He remanded Saleem in custody for pre-sentencing reports. Saleem will be sentenced in April.
Saleem had claimed during the second day of his trial that his words had appeared threatening, but they had not been intended as such. He claimed he had repeated chants of "Europe you will pay with your blood" and "7/7 is on its way" because "everyone else was saying it".
