Bangladesh: Another Islamist Explosives Cache Found

Banglabust.jpgNews from New Age and Daily Star:

On Sunday, January 7, six members of the Islamic terrorist group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) were arrested at Narayanganj, about 10 miles from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. 31 packets of high explosives, each containing 500 grams of explosive gel, were recovered in the raid, along with 80 shell casings for home-made grenades/mortars.

Yesterday, two more raids took place in the vicinity of Dhaka, indicating the potential for JMB to be making plans to mount more bomb campaigns in the upcoming general elections. The raids took place at Badda and Narsingdi. Three people were arrested. These were named as 24-year old Mohammad Ibrahim Khalil Ullah alias Shaikat, 17-year old Hassan Ali aka Hridoy, and 25-year old Shoyeb, alias Jahir Nuruzzaman.

Ullah lives in Narsingdi district, but the other two live in Tangail, a mountainous and wooded district in the heart of Bangladesh which has long been a center for covert JMB activity. Shoyeb has a warrant outstanding for his involvement in the mass-bombings which took place across the nation on August 17, 2005. He is suspected of involvement with two bombs which were set on that day at Kalihati and Tangail upazila (subdistrict) police stations.

Recovered during during the raids were 68 packets of explosive gel, each weighing 500 grams, weighing 34 kilograms in total, 40 casings for home made mortars, 4 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, packed in eight bags weighing 500 grams, and a book on jihad.

As was the case in the January 7 raids, the information which led to the arrests came from Abdul Rahman Alal (aka Fahad), who was arrested from a bus station in Tangail district on December 29. With an accomplice, Saiful Islam, aka Russell, Fahad was found with weapons, explosives and detonators.
