Islamic Injustice: Nazanin To Stand Trial

nazaninNazanin Mahabad Fatehi is young Iranian woman, who was sentenced to death on January 3, 2006. Her "crime" had been to protect herself against rapists. She was with her boyfriend and her niece and her boyfriend in a park west of Tehran in March 2005, when she was set upon by three men.

The two boyfriends fled on their motorcycles, leaving the two girls to fend for themselves. Nazanin and her niece Somayeh were thrown to the ground, and the men tried to rape them. Nazanin stabbed one of the assailants in the hand.

The girls tried to escape, but the males attacked again. Nazanin stabbed one of the men in the chest. He died, and Nazanin was accused of murder, and found guilty.

Sentenced to hang, Nazanin became one of several women facing unjust treatment under the sexist terms of Iranian law.

A champion of Nazanin Fatehi's case is the Canadian-based model and humanitarian, Nazanin Afshin-Jam. She wrote a letter to Kofi Annan, then head of the United Nations on May 17. The letter can be found HERE.

In June, 2006, Ayatollah Shahroudi overturned the death sentence against Nazanin Fatehi. A retrial commenced on August 30, but was then adjourned. The trial will re-start on Wednesday, January 10.

To draw attention to the case of Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi, her champion, Nazanin Afshin-Jam has made a documentary. It is 30 minutes long. I suggest you watch it.

DOCUMENTARY ON NAZANIN FATEHI

And then, once you are aware of the urgency of letting the Iranian authorities become aware that you too know of the injustices and inconsistencies in her case, I suggest you sign the petition for clemency for Nazanin Fatehi. That can be found HERE.

More information on Nazanin's case can be found at the website HERE.

Although it's a rather minimalist petition - the final goal should not be less than abolishing islamic law and islamic rule - I signed it. I doubt very much whether a petition has any effect whatsoever on the islamic regime in Iran, but you never know, do you ?

Do you think if the West could save her and bring her to the West for start a new life, would she denounce Islam for causing her misery? No way, she would blame something, anything but her precious Islam for her treatment. Therefore, I don't care.

Of course the text of the petition is minimalist, this in the aim of actually saving her life, and not raising a polemic against the Iranian government. (Listen on the documentary how Nazanin Afshin-Jam says she always has to be politically correct to have a chance to actually save the young woman)

I think none of the defenders of Nazanin, Delara, and the other youths and women in Iran is unaware of that, but I think too that there is a choice to make in that instance, between being efficient to save innocents, or to pour oil on the fire. Unfortunately, we have, I have, in this specific instance, to be "appeasers". That doesn't mean that we don't think more globally !

About the petition, which has reached now 283,449 signatures, I really think it is thanks to it that Nazanin Mahabad Fatehi got a relatively fairer and more normal, according to civilized standards, trial. The next session of this trial is today. Let's hope it gives good news for her.

About the death penalty, I am personnally an unconditionnal opponent (I won't loose time to defend Saddam's life, though, even if I don't agree with the sentence), but I am trying to do what is at my level to save first innocent people, or "little offenders". I think we have to be realistic according to the aims we have set for ourselves...

Thank you for the sake of Nazanin, Giraldus, to have published the news ! I let you informed each time I learn something interesting.

Thanks, Spipou

Your emails are always appreciated.

I thnk, John, that you are being a bit unfair. You are probably right that she would blame anything else but Islam for her predicament.

But she is a human being, and as a human being, she should not be forced to suffer this cruel situation.

I do not like to labour the point, but Western Resistance is not against Muslims They are human beings, and have as much right to live on this planet as anyone else.

They may be brainwashed, they may be misguided, but they are humans, humans whom we hope will ultimately denounce the creed of 7th century war and barbarism.
