US: Facts Against Visions in the Armed Forces' Recruitment of Muslims

The great Thomas Sowell maintains that in the contest between facts and moral visions in the public arena, moral visions usually win. This is happenning today in America's armed forces, with the untouchable moral vision that "Islam is a Religion of Peace" which is "consistent with Western values" is defeating uncomfortable facts, such as the treason of Hasan Akbar. But some people speak for the facts: Pentagon Advisor Doubts Wisdom of US Militarys Recruiting Muslims

(AgapePress) - Retired Lieutenant Colonel Bob Maginnis, a Pentagon advisor and national defense expert, believes U.S. military officials are making a radical mistake by trying to make America's armed services more attractive to Muslims.

The Pentagon has lately gone out of its way to attract Muslims into the U.S. military, citing the need for officers and troops who can speak Arabic and understand Islamic culture. And recently, Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England said that Muslims and the Islamic religion are totally compatible with Western values.

However, Maginnis disagrees with that assessment. In fact, he contends, "Someone who's an adherent to the teaching of the Koran and then abides by what it says, that person -- as far as I can understand -- is incompatible with Western culture."

The retired Army officer says U.S. military leaders may well agree with his concerns, but they will not go against the policy of the Bush administration or even their commander-in-chief himself. "The President says Islam is a respectable faith, that it's a great faith," Maginnis notes. "If President Bush says there is not a problem, then you can't expect that his subordinates are going to come out with a contrary view."[...]

This is a disturbing development.

As a US military member accomplishing some academic study in the military context in 2003, I discovered another disturbing dimension of our race to inclusiveness.

The US Military has always attempted to "meet the religious needs" of all military members. This approach was born in an effort to meet the specific religious needs of different denominations of Christians and Jews, and then at some point, Muslims. To facilitate this inclusiveness, the US military has maintained a diverse chaplaincy such that each major division of faiths can be served at US military bases and deployed locations around the world. Understandably, those individuals brought into the chaplain corps must meet certain certification standards of their specific faith group as measured by accomplishment of a certain number of credit hours in an appropriate learning institution (e.g. accredited seminary).

As of 2003, the institutions that could show they could provide the required number of credit hours for a graduate to enter the US military as a 'Muslim Chaplain' (perhaps a contradiction of terms) had one thing in common. Each one of these institutions were funded and presumably operated by Wahhabist organizations. Last time I checked, the Wahhabi movement within Islam is noted to be a significant contributor to the current radicalization trends within Islam.

This is an uncomfortable situation to say the least.
