Netherlands: Muslim "Terrorist" Will Be Extradited To US
News from Expatica and Associated Press:
Yesterday a court in the Hague ruled that a Dutch citizen of Iraqi origin will be extradited to the United States, accused of possessing explosives and planning attacks against US military personnel in Iraq in 2003.
The man, 32-year old Wesam al Delaema, has made claims that he will not receive a fair trial in the US, and is likely to face torture there. In 2003 in Fallujah, Delaema took video footage of Islamists from the group "Warriors of Fallujah" preparing a roadside bomb.
Delaema's home in Amersfoort was raided in May last year after information was provided by the US. A copy of the video, which had been broadcast on Arabic TV channels, was found in his home.
In 2003, Delaema appeared on Dutch TV denouncing the US, and saying: "I don't care if I myself die or not. I want to offer myself up for my land, for my people." His family claims Delaema was joking in this interview.
The US authorities state that Delaema will be tried in a federal rather than a military court, and have said that if he is convicted in the US they have no objections to him spending his jail term in a Dutch prison.

Excellent news, but there is an adder under the grass here.
I think that the authorities in the USA, (in this case) and also the UK in general, should be aware that when convicted (Dutch) criminals are returned to the Netherlands their sentences are reduced to comply with the soft sentences meted out in that country. Typically, this happens to Dutch drug-dealers convicted in the USA. If sentenced to 20 years in the USA, their sentences are reduced - often to a meager three years - upon return and they are invariably released upon return. This seems to me an unacceptable practice, and one the relevant authorities should be aware of when allowing convicted criminals or terrorists to return to the Netherlands to serve their sentence.
