Thailand: More Killings, Another School Burns In Muslim South
Today, three people were killed in the Muslim south, only one day before the prime minister Surayud Chulanot is due to arrive on an official visit.
In Rangae district, Narathiwat, a 33 year old janitor at a school was shot dead as he drove to work. Manaseng Jehso was employed at Ban Loobodeyae school. His killers had pursued him in a vehicle. Following his killing, the school was closed as there were fears for the safety of students and staff.
On the night of November 3, four schools in Yala province were set alight by suspected Muslim insurgents. Last night another Yala school had been torched. The school in Moo Song village in Bannang Sata district was set alight around 2 am (local time) this morning, and burned to the ground. 35 schools in Yala are currently closed after the recent arson attacks.
In Pattani town, Pattani province this morning, 36-year old Masale Paka, a worker at a petrol station, was taking his wife to her workplace on his motorcycle. Gunmen riding in a pick-up truck followed them and shot dead both Masale and his wife, 33-year old Usani Tuyong. Masale had been a crime prevention volunteer in Yaring district.
On Monday, an attempt had been made to detonate a home-made bomb in Joh-I-Rong (Cho Airong) district, Narathiwat. The five kilogram device was hidden in a motorcycle and was left beside the rack at Joh-I-Rong train station. The device was intended to have been detonated when a passenger train arrived at the station.
Police discovered a mobile phone attached to the device, and found that a call had been made when passengers were getting on and off the rain. The call should have triggered a detonation, but the device had failed to explode.
