Russia: Suspected Islamists Kill Faith Healer
News from Associated Press reports that a faith healer was shot dead by two gunmen in Ingushetia on Monday (November 6). The woman healer was at her home when the gunmen burst in, stated the interior ministry.
This is the second incidence of a faith healer being killed in the federal republic in two years, and is thought to have been the work of militant Muslims. Muslims regard faith healing as heresy.
In the small federal republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessia, which adjoins the Caucasus, seven healers have been killed this year by Islamists. The last healer to be killed there was an imam, Adulkerim Khadzhi-Bayramukov, who was shot dead on August 7. It was then said by the prosecutor at Karachaevsk, where the imam had lived, that healing offended Muslim purists. He said: "They insist that old imams stop healing. They say it's heathenism and a terrible sin in Islam."
The woman who was shot yesterday in Ingushettia was 40-year old Elena Goryachenko, a native of Chechnya. She was a well known doctor, who also practiced faith healing, who lived in the village of Ordzhonikidze.
In separate news, on Thursday (November 2) an Ingushetian man was arrested in Grozny, Chechnya, after a check upon his car revealed that the vehicle contained a large cache of weapons, including explosives. Interfax quoted the Chechen interior minister, Ruslan Alkhanov as saying: "The car's driver has been identified as Salambek Yevloyev, a resident of Nazran. Police searched the car, finding two loaded Kalashnikov assault rifles, three improvised explosive devices wrapped in adhesive tape and with wires attached to them inside the car. The explosive devices resembled so-called 'suicide-belts'."
