UK: Mosque Teacher Jailed For Groping Boy
From the Birmingham Evening Mail, news comes that mosque teacher Mohammed Rabani has been sentenced earlier today to a 12 month jail sentence. He had been a teacher at a mosque in Crocketts Road in Handsworth, Birmingham.
Last October, Rabani had sent the rest of the class out of the classroom at the mosque. A 13-year old boy remained in the after-school classroom. Rabani the began to indecently touch the teenager. He placed the teenager's jacket over his legs, so no-one entering the room could see him groping the youth.
The boy had attended the mosque school with his sister. Edward Coke, prosecuting, said that after the incident, Rabani turned up at the youth's home and told his mother that the boy had had been spreading rumours.
Judge Phillip Gregory said: "You came to this country on a work permit to teach in a mosque. As such you took on a position of responsibility and trust. You have abused that position of trust not merely on one occasion but twice."
"You have previously been convicted of hitting three children with a stick, but that does not appear to have taught you a good deal because you subsequently committed this particularly unpleasant piece of bullying of a sexual nature on a young boy in your care."
Rabani, a married father of one, had come originally from Pakistan. His defense lawyer claimed that the teacher would never be able to teach in a mosque again. What a surprise.
