Bosnia: Two Muslims Arrested For Alleged War Crimes

News from AKI, Reuters AlertNet and Deutsche Presse Agentur via Playfuls.com and the Raw Story reports that in Bosnia-Hercegovina, two former soldiers have been arrested for war-crimes against civilians during the 1992 to 1995 civil war.

The two individuals, Sefko Afic and Zijad Kurtovic, are both Muslims. News of their arrests was reported today by local media. Sefko Alic, aged 38, was arrested in the town of Buzim (Bosanska Krupa according to Reuters) in the west of the nation, and Zihad Kurtovic was arrested in the southern town of Mostar.

The State Investigation and Protection Agency (SIPA) announced in a statement that "One person was arrested and handed over to the prosecution on the suspicion that he committed a war crime against prisoners of war", but was not specific about if this related to the arrest of Alic. When Alic was arrested, roadblocks were set up by protesters, who demanded his release.

The arrests of the two individuals follow the airing on Bosnian TV of a video in August, which depicted was crimes against Serb refugees. Another video which was shown in August depicted general Atif Dudakovic, a Muslim, ordering soldiers to burn Serb villages. The state court is investigating Dudakovic's alleged actions, which have been denied by the former general.

Sefil Alic was a commander of the 505th Brigade of the Bosnian Muslim Army. He is believed, according to one report, to have taken part in an offensive, code-named Oluja (Storm) which tried to take the east of Croatia from the Croatian Serb army in August 1995.

AKI states that Alic had commanded a group called "Hamze" which was depicted in a video slaughtering Serb civilians. Kurtovic had allegedly committed crimes in the village of Dreznica, near Mostar. The two men were turned over to the state prosecutor in Sarajevo.
