Bosnia: Mosque Hit By Rocket-Propelled Grenade
News from Reuters, B 92 News, ABC.net.au DPA via the Raw Story Associated Press via International Herald Tribune and from Stratfor reports that a mosque in Bosnia-Hercegovina was attacked in the early hours of Tuesday (October 10) by a grenade, launched from a position about 100 yards away.
The mosque is situated in Jasenice in the ethnically divided town of Mostar in the south of the country. Jasenice is a predominantly Croat and non-Muslim suburb of Mostar. The attack happened at around 4.30 am, shortly before worshippers were due to have their pre-dawn meal before fasting for Ramadan.
No-one was hurt in the attack, but the mosque itself suffered extensive damage from the 60 mm "Zolja" grenade fireed from a hand held launcher. The main entrance, front windows and domes, and the facade and back windows were damaged.
The mosque itself was built last year, on the ruins of an earlier Islamic building which had been destroyed in the 1992-1995 war.
Salem Dedovic, the head imam at the mosque, called the attack "disturbing", especially as it happened at Ramadan. Ljubo Beslic, Mostar's Croat mayor, condemned the attack. He called for citizens to remain calm, and to assist police to find the person responsible.
Last weekend, there was an attack upon a Catholic cemetery in the nearby village of Gnojnice, and officials are worried that the attack upon the mosque was an act of retaliation.
