Germany: Muslim Expert Can't Stand It And Has To Leave

Tibi.jpgAccording to Deutsche Presse Agentur via Monsters & Critics, Germany's best-known Islamic expert, Bassam Tibi (pictured, left), has said that after 44 years of living in Germany, he has had enough. A native of Syria, he now claims that "I'm fed up with being classed as a Syrian with a German passport. I still consider myself a stranger in this country and am treated accordingly."

62-year old Tibi's decision was reported in today's edition of Taggespiegel. He claims that Germans are "miserable" and said he doubted if they could integrate.

A lecturer at the University of Goettingen, and author of more than 30 books, Tibi invented the term "Leitkultur" or "dominant culture". This term became adopted by conservative politicians who employed it when talking of the need for migrants to adapt to German values.

Born in Damascus, Tibi first came to Germany when he was 18, and has been a citizen since 1967.

Tibi's expression of disdain for Germany comes as some surprise, as only recently he was stating that Europeans had stopped defending their values. He was speaking in an interview with der Spiegel, shortly after the Deutsche Oper had announced that it would be cancelling a production of Idomeneo.

The production of the opera involved a depiction of the severed head of the "prophet" Mohammed (pictured). Because of fears of Muslim attack, Deutsche Oper's director, Kirsten Harms, pulled the four performances scheduled for November. Following protests, Idomeneo will now be staged, but probably not until after December.

MoHead.jpgTibi said then: "When it comes to Islam, there is no freedom of the press nor freedom of opinion in Germany. Organized groups in Islamic communities want to decide what is said and done here. I myself have been dropped from numerous events because of threats."

He also claimed that "you can no longer criticize the religion. Accusing somebody of racism is a very effective weapon in Germany. Islamists know this: As soon as you accuse someone of demonizing Islam, then the European side backs down. I have also been accused of such nonsense, even though my family can trace its roots right back to Muhammad and I myself know the Koran by heart."

Tibi claimed that Muslims needed to drop notions of converting others, jihad, and also notions of introducing sharia. He said that pluralism and tolerance are "pillars of modern society". His decision to leave Germany now seems to be a contradiction of his previous stated positions.
