UK: Muslim Cabdriver Refuses Blind Woman And Her Guide Dog

In Britain, and other countries, guide dogs allow blind people to have mobility and some independence. The dogs undergo intensive training and have to have the right temperament to be selected for this training. Where dogs are not allowed in shops, there is usually a sign which states "except guide dogs". Can drivers are obliged by law to allow guide dogs to accompany their blind owners on rides.

But the law meant nothing to Muslim cab driver Abdul Rasheed Majekodumni of west London, states the Daily Mail. On a cold rainy night, a blind woman, 39-year old Mrs Jane Vernon, had just finished an appearance on BBC television's Newsnight program. She had been invited onto the current affairs program because she is legal officer at the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) and wanted to get home to Hammersmith, west London, where she lived.

The BBC has a contract with a company called Niven's and Co, a minicab company, to drive its clients home. But when the mini-cab containing Abdul Rasheed Majekodumni arrived to take her home, Mrs Vernon's guide dog offended the driver's religious sensibilities. According to him, dogs are impure, and because he was a Muslim he refused to let her into the cab.

Mrs Vernon said: "This experience was very upsetting. I was tired and cold and just wanted to get home but this driver made me feel like I was a second-class citizen, like I didn't count at all."

Being a legal officer, she knew her rights. She called the cab company, but said: "The owner of the minicab firm, Niven Sinclair, was also very insensitive, telling me that what had happened to me wasn't really very important, and I should have more respect for other people's culture. They have shown very little respect for my rights as a disabled person and have never once offered me an apology."

Mrs Vernon pressed charges. As a result, the Muslim bigot was fined £200 ($375) by Marylebone Magistrates Court. Majekodumni was also ordered to pay £1,200 ($2,251) for not complying with the regulations of the Disability Discrimination Act.

Even though he had broken the law, Majekodumni was unrepentant, and insisted that he would still continue to refuse to allow blind peoples' guide dogs into his car.

Under the law, a cab driver who does not take a guide dog can lose his or her license.

And one wonders if this law-breaking cab company still has its contract with the Muslim-appeasing BBC?

This is not the first time that Muslims have decided that their religious contempt for dogs, who are said to be "najess" or "unclean" came above their obligations under law, or any respect for the rights of people with disabilities.

Earlier this month, the Daily Mail states, Mrs Vernon helped at a legal case against Basir Miah, another Muslim who refused to take a blind woman in his cab. 37-year old Bernie Reddington had been to Great Ormond Street Hospital for an appointment, but Miah refused to let her in the car, saying her dog was "dirty".

Basir Miah was fined £150 ($282) for breaching his license agreement, and made him pay Ms Reddington £250 ($469) compensation.

We have laws in Britain. When will Muslims in Britain accept that their religion and religious prejudices do not excuse them from abiding by the law? If Muslim cabdrivers decide that their religious prejudices are more important than abiding by the law and showing the courtesy to blind people that is due to them, they should not work as cabdrivers and should have their licenses revoked.
