Saudi Arabia: Enemies Of Islam To Have "Tongues Cut Off"

Nayef.jpgThe aging 71-year old Saudi Interior Minister, Prince Nayef bin Abd Al-'Aziz (pictured), appeared in a TV broadcast on Al-Majd TV on September 25, 2006. In this bizarre, rambling speech, with the Grand Mufti sitting beside him, Prince Nayef spoke of the "enemies of Islam" who were setting themselves up as "preachers".

He said: "I say clearly that the evil of this generation is far worse than that of other generations." He condemned the enemies of Islam whom he described as claiming to be Muslims, yet are "as far as can be from Islam", and called for a Jihad against these enemies of Islam.

He claimed Osama bin Laden was "worthless" but said that he was an "agent of foreign intelligence agencies". These agencies are not stated, but when Nayef asked "Who established Al-Qaeda?" there are hints that he is blaming the US.

Nayef condemns the corruption of Islam and said that "These people have been tempted by the West, and have been employed in its service. We are familiar with their relations with foreign elements. We are fighting them and will continue to fight them, and we will cut off their tongues."

In the audience while the prince made his speech were members of the muttawa or "religious policemen" from the The Department of Virtue Propagation and Vice Prevention, wearing their distinctive red and white head-dresses.

The video has been recorded and translated by MEMRI TV. It is also viewable here and a transcript can be found here.

In an interview from November, 2002, again transcribed by MEMRI TV, Nayef suggested that "Zionists" were behind 9/11. He also blamed Western interference in Arab education and Islamic Law which had also created a climate where the West was critical of Saudi Arabia, even though he conceded that "the U.S. people are innocent and good in general".

According to Saudi Net: " Prince Nayef Ibn Abdul Aziz was born in the city of Taif in 1934 (1353 H.). He received his education at "The Princes School" and at the hands of senior Ulema (religious leaders) and sheikhs. In addition, he has read widely in the fields of politics, diplomacy and security."

He has held various posts, and became the Minister of the Interior in 1975. He is Honorary President of the Arab Interior Ministers' Council.
