Norway: Controversial Muslim Cartoons To Be Aired On TV
With a hat tip to The Observer on News from Norway, the Norwegian television station TV2 is going to show the notorious Mohammed cartoons. The 12 cartoons, originally published in Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten on September 30 last year, led in February to massive protests throughout the Muslim world. Death threats were issued against the cartoonists, who were forced to go into hiding.
The protests against the cartoons led directly to at least thirty deaths, though in Nigeria, subsequent attacks against Christians and their reprisals led to about 100 people dying.
The cartoons have never before been shown on Norwegian television. The airing of the images on TV2 will coincide with the first anniversary of their publication. The news of the broadcast has come from Nettavisen (in Norwegian).
The Observer states that they will appear in a documentary by Per Christian Magnus, who believes that by showing them on TV for the first time, freedom of speech will be strengthened. Magnus claims that by not showing the cartoons, the story surrounding them will itself be censored.
In an update, it is noted that the Norwegian version of Aftenposten (though not yet on the English edition) reports that the Norwegian Foreign Office has now informed all Norwegian embassies in Muslim countries about the broadcast.
As The Observer states: "This is going to be very interesting."
