Canada: Arson Attack At Ottowa Islamic School
A fire broke out this morning at the Abraar Islamic School in Ottowa, Canada, which teaches 260 children from Kindergarten up to eighth grade, states Ottowa Sun and 580 CFRA Radio. The school is based in Grenon Avenue, and the fire broke out around 2 am in the north west exterior of the building. Firemen managed to contain the blaze, but the fire and smoke has cost $100,000 worth of damage.
The Ottowa Hate Crimes Unit and the Ottowa Police were initially investigating the incident. An "arson dog" was being used to sniff the scene. However, the Hate Crimes Unit appears to have stopped its probe. Det. Will Hinterberger from the Unit said: "At this time, we haven't got any evidence pointing towards a hate crime."
The chairman of the school board, Abdala Kheireddine said: "As far a we're concerned, it's still under investigation." He said the school would re-open tomorrow.
A former teacher at the school, Dr Aisha Sherazi said that there used to be disturbances from neighbourhood kids aimed at playground toys, but "never anything of this magnitude."
Apparently the school aroused controversy last March, when the school launched its own investigation into an essay which had been written by a student. This essay made the news as it was about revenge on Israel for killing the founder of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.
One teacher helped the student to design its title page - an illustration of a burning Star of David, a machine gun and a Palestinian flag waving on top of the Dome of the Rock. Another teacher had written of the essay: "God bless you, your efforts are good."
