Spain: Extradition Of Islamist Bomb Suspect Sought From Italy
A 34-year old Egyptian-born man, wanted in connection with the Madrid train bombings of March 11, 2004, is being sought on an extradition request by Spanish authorities, states Expatica. The man in question is Rabei Osman El Sayed, aka "Mohammed the Egyptian" (pictured left).
He was indicted on April 11 this year on charges of committing 191 murders, and 1,755 attempted murders.
He had been arrested on June 8, 2004 in Milan, Italy, after a surveillance operation which had involved Italy, Spain, France and Belgium. He was extradited from Italy to Spain in December that year so that he could be interviewed by the investigating magistrate, Juan del Olmio and be present for judicial actions relating to his indictment. He was returned to Italy in April 2005.
Sayed is currently to be tried soon in Italy for belonging to a terrorist organisation. The Spanish authorities are making the request now to ensure that he is present in Spain when his trial for the Madrid train bombings begins. The trial is expected to commence on February 2007.
So far, 28 people, who were also indicted on various charges on April 11 this year, are currently in custody, awaiting trial.
More information on Sayed can be found on CBC and CNN, with information on other suspects available on the BBC.
