Norway: Muslim Plot To Attack US, Israeli Embassies

We wrote on Wednesday that a group of four people had been arrested on Tuesday (19 September) in connection with the shooting of the front of the Oslao synagogue. One of these had previously been arrested in Germany over fears he was planning a terror attack at one of the World Cup soccer venues (June 9 to July 9). He had also been arrested in connection with threats made against a crime journalist.

Now according to Reuters and Aftenposten, the four individuals have been charged with terrorism. The police have only said that the men are aged between 20 and 30 and are of varying ethnic backgrounds.

Today, Norwegian prosecutors told a court in Oslo that Norwegian secret services (PST) had placed a bug in the car of the main suspect (probably the Pakistani who had been arrested in Germany). The car was a Mercedes. The secret services had recorded conversations between the four men in which they planned terror attacks.

Unni Fries, prosecuting, said: "They spoke in detail about how to attack the synagogue and the U.S. and Israeli embassies". Fries asked the court to approve the detention of the four suspects for four weeks, with no visitors nor contact with the outside world.

The defense lawyers for the men said they were innocent. One of the individuals is 1 28-year old of Turkish origin, two have Pakistani backgrounds one aged 29, the other 28) and one was Norwegian in origin, aged 26.

If they are found guilty of conspiring to carry out acts of terror each could face a jail term of up to 12 years.

Unni Fries said the main suspect, who was arrested by German Police in the summer, was found to have had drawings of rockets in his car. Fries added that this suspect was in Britain in June and told his girlfriend over the telephone that he "felt he had to act".

The US ambassador, Ben Whitney, said: "We are deeply concerned about the emerging information on these planned terrorist attacks. This situation reflects the importance of having the necessary legal tools to prevent terrorism."

The ambassador for Israel, Miryam Shomrat, is said to have been a particular target. Norwegian newspaper VG claims that in the surveillance operation, the suspects were heard to be discussing cutting her head off.

Ms Shomrat told VG: "The firing on the synagogue was serious enough in itself. If there really were plans to carry out assassinations it is extra serious."

The 26-year old Norwegian who is charged had lived for 12 years on several of the Norwegian King's estates. He is the son of an employee at the royal court.

No terror organisation has so far been officially linked with the four suspects, but as we wrote on September 20, there are suspicions that they are connected with the Al-Qaeda connected terror group, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC).
