US: Teacher Arrested After Attacking Islam In School
The demons of political correctness are alive and well in post-9/11 America. Today's Washington Post, commented upon by Associated Press in Kesq3 News reports that on Monday, the fifth anniversary of 9/11, a substitute teacher in Maryland lost her temper when she heard a greeting of peace in Arabic.
The teacher, 49-year old Carol McVey, heard students at a Gaithesrburg high school practicing a speech which was to be delivered that afternoon. Hearing the Islamic peace greeting "assalamu alaikum", she apparently shouted at the students and their teacher: "Islam doesn't mean peace, it means killing everyone for peace."
She was so furious that Kulsum Malik, the teacher, took his students into the corridor, where Ms McVey shouted at him: "Because of you our families died in New York!"
She threatened to go to the principal to ask for Malik to be made to leave Kingsview Middle School. Apparently her anger backfired, and when she went to the office of the school's assistant principal, Laurie Bricker, she herself was told to go.
Police were called. PC police spokeswoman Lucille Baur said that she did not know if Kulsum Malik or any of the students who heard Ms McVey's comments were Muslim or not. With a name like Kulsum Malik, he doesn't sound like an Episcopalian to me.
Ms McVey was in such a rage that as she was escorted away, she shouted at a Hispanic teacher about "the inappropriateness of speaking to students in languages other than English."
Ms McVey of Olney was charged with resisting arrest, disrupting school activities and trespassing. She was released on her own recognisance.
Even though she may have been a little upset, she is certainly right that Islam does only mean peace after opposition has been destroyed. But Lucille Baur of Montgomery County Police, Maryland, certainly deserves a PC award.
