UK: Mosque Staff Accused Secretary Of "Black Magic"
The largest mosque in Europe, the Regents Park Mosque sits incongruously in the verdant surroundings of Regents Park, north London, its ostentatious gold dome showing to the world that it was built with Saudi money. It has been the scene of conflicts and disputes in the past. Once, Iqbal Sacranie was smashed against a wall by radical young Muslims who mistook him for a "moderate".
But its latest conflict is seedy, sexist and a sign of how backward and primitive Islam can be. A woman who was employed as a secretary was subjected to false accusations of fraud, and claims that she engaged in "black magic". Today's Times and Life STyle Extra report that an employment tribunal was told that Nahid Mahmoud was treated in a "spiteful" fashion, in what constituted an "exploitation of the weakness of women in Islamic culture".
The head of administration and human resources at the Islamic Cultural Centre and Central Mosque, Younez Teinaz, conducted his own vendetta against Mrs Mahmoud. He repeatedly accused her of being in Britain illegally, even though she proved she was legally a resident, and accused her of fraud, black magic, bullying, using "dirty words" and "wasting valuable office hours in idle conversation."
Mrs Mahmoud was a personal assistant to the mosque's director-general, Ahmed al-Dubayan. Most of Younes Teinaz's attacks on Ms Mahmoud comprised letters which he sent to Dr al-Dubayan.
Ms Mahmoud started work at the mosque in 1999, and still is employed there. She had to take five weeks off work because of the abuse she received, and still has depression. Her 13 year old son even ran away from home because of his mother's treatment.
Dr al-Dubayan was not named in the case, because he is a member of the Saudi diplomatic community, an attache at the Saudi Arabian embassy, and therefore has diplomatic immunity. Teinaz, of Libyan origin, was employed in 2004. Mrs Mahmoud came to the UK from Egypt when married to her first husband, and in 2004 was given leave to stay.
Teinaz's campaign of spite and intimidation began when she did not let him have access to the noticeboard - he accused her making a rape and theft allegation against a member of the mosque, when she had not, and called for her to be sacked for "immoral activities". When Mrs Mahmoud made a comment on the colour of the eyes of a member of the mosque, Shaheed Hussain, Teinaz urged Hussain to file a complaint of "sexual harassment" against her.
Teinaz even went to the police, claiming *with no evidence) that Mrs Mahmoud had arranged the marriage of a woman who was already married. He also claimed that Mrs Mahmoud had indulged in bigamy. He admitted at the tribunal that he had rifled through Mrs Mahmoud's desk to find "evidence" to use against her.
Once, when Mrs Mahmoud was working late, Teinaz ordered a security guard to evict her from the premises.
Sheikh Anwar Mady, deputy director-general of the mosque, had told the tribunal that Teinaz' behaviour "amounted to an exploitation of the weakness of women in Islamic culture."
The tribunal found in Mrs Mahmoud's favour and awarded her £34,751 ($65,128) for sexual and racial discrimination against both Teinaz and the mosque. The payments are broken down thus: £15,000 ($28,119) for sex discrimination, £1,000 ($1,875) for race discrimination, £2,000 ($3,749) for victimisation and £5,000 ($9,373) for aggravated damages. £5,122 ($9,601) was awarded for not following proper employment procedures. The remainder of the sum comprised interest and lost wages
Teinaz was a volunteer at the mosque and it is said that his reponsibilities have been "substantially reduced." If the mosque does not remove Teinaz from ALL duties at the mosque after his disgraceful behaviour, then it shows that the Islamic Cultural Centre and Central Mosque condones such appalling treatment of its women employees.
Teinaz was also the subject of three other complaints made against him at the mosque, by women employees. Teinaz is also the head environmental health officer for Hackney Council, a leftist body which squanders rate payers' funds on spurious causes and charities. I should know as I formerly worked with these spurious charities as a graphic designer.
The central London tribunal recorded that "We found Dr Teinaz to be an evasive and unreliable witness. There was evidence that he had sought to interfere with and manipulate the evidence of others involved. The rumours on which Dr Teinaz relied were fanned if not instigated by him."
