UK: Four Muslims Charged Under Terror Laws
News from the BBC, This is London, Yahoo, Excite, the Guardian and Al Jazeera state that two brothers were among four people charged under Britain's terror laws.
The four who were charged were from among the fourteen who had been arrested on the night of Sept 1/2 from locations in London.
20-year old Hassan Mutegombwa was charged with procuring funds for terrorism, while his 22-year old brother Yassin Mutegombwa was charged with three counts of receiving training for terrorism, a new offence under Britain's Terrorism Act 2006.
Two other individuals who were charged are 47-year old Musa Akmet and 24-year old Mustafa Abdullah. These were cjarged with possessing information likely to be useful to someone committing terrorism.
Akmet was further charged with having possession of a firearm without a valid licence, an offence under the Firearms Act. This was a 16 mm mini flare launcher.
The individuals appeared one after another at City of Westminster magistrates. They are due to reappear by video-link at the same court on October 10. They are expected to be having a committal hearing on October 24. The four have all been remanded in custody.
Mustafa Abdullah comes from Stockwell. His lawyer made a plea of not guilty but did not apply for bail. Hassan Mutegombwa, who lives at Upper Norwood in south London, was charged under section 15 of the terrorism Act 2000, of procuring funds for terrorism. It is said that on July 23 he had "invited another to provide money and intended that it should be used, or had reasonable cause to suspect that it may be used, for the purpose of terrorism". Mutegombwa even waved to the gallery when he appeared in court. His lawyer asked for bail, but it was refused. A not guilty plea was made.
Yassin Mutegombwa also comes from Norwood. He pleaded not guilty and his solicitor, Nadeem Afzal, applied for bail, which was refused by judge Nicholas Evans. It is alleged that Mutegombwa received training at Matley Wood caravan and camping site at Beaulieu Road, Lyndhurst in Hampshire, and at Pondwood farm in Berkshire, according to a statement from the Metropolitan police.
The training at Hampshire took place between April 28 and May 1 this year, and again between June 2 and June 4. The training at Pondwood Farm at White Waltham took place on June 18 this year. He is charged under Section 6 (1) of the Terrorism Act 2006 of receiving training in terrorism, and of Section 54 (1) of the earlier Terrorism Act 2000, relating to weapons training. He is the first person to be charged under Section 6 of the Terrorism Act 2006.
Musa Akmet was the last to appear before the court. He comes from Eltham. There were no indications of a plea from his lawyer, and no application for bail.
Two of the fourteen people arrested a week and a half ago have been released, and eight remain in police custody, awaiting charges or release.
