Indonesia: Two More Islamists Convicted For Involvement in 2005 Bali Blasts
We reported on September 5 that an Islamist who sheltered Noordin Top, (an architect of the October 1, 2005, bombings on Bali), Abdul Aziz, was given an eight year prison sentence. Aziz had been on trial since May 9 this year. Also on trial at the same courthouse in Denpasar on Bali, but being tried in separate courts, were Dwi Widiarto, aged 33, Mohammad Cholily, aged 28 and Anif Solchanudin, aged 24.
Today, verdicts were announced on Mohammad Cholily (pictured) and also Dwi Widianto, according to AKI, BBC, Jakarta Post and Antara News.
Cholily was given a sentence of 18 years' jail. He had helped to assemble the explosives used in the three blasts and also videotaped the confessions and farewell video of the three suicide bombers. He had studied bomb making under the main planner of the bombing, Azahari bin Husin. The three-judge panel said he had also studied with Noordin Top, who is now a fugitive. Malaysian-born Husin was killed in a security operation on November 9 last year.
Dwi Widiarto was "found, legally and convincingly, guilty of having
taken part in terrorism" by presiding judge Rena Wardana, and given a sentence of eight years' jail. Widyarto had made a video of Noordin Top, and had assisted in the video made of the three suicide bombers. He was accused of transferring the video onto disc. He is said to have met Noordin Top at least three times before the blasts, which took place at downtown Kuta and at two restaurants on the seafront at Jimbaran beach. 20 people were killed and 200 injured.
Noordin Mohammed Top threatened the West in this video. Top, Azahari bin Husin and the bombers were all members of terror group Jemaah Islamiyah.
The remaining man, Anif Solchanudin, is expected to hear his verdict soon. He is being accused of training to be a fourth suicide bomber. The prosecutor in his trial had said: "He was told that if he spilled his own blood then the doors of heaven would be open for him and 70 members of his family."
