Belgium: Police Chief Wants Separate Jails For Muslim Radicals

The problem of radical Islam spreading within jails is becoming increasingly common. The problem exists in France, where, with a population that is more than 50% Muslim already, Salafists and members of Tablighi Jamaat actively recruit new members. In Britain, young prisoners at Feltham Young Offenders' Institute have been subjected to forced conversion under threat of violence. Jails in the United States and Australia are seen as fertile grounds for the spread of radical Islam.

News from Expatica relates that the director of the Belgian federal police force, Glenn Audenaert, has suggested that the avoid a similar situation getting out of control, that Muslim extremists should be detained in separate prisons. The move would lessen the chances of young criminals becoming wooed into radical Islam by charismatic fundamentalists.

Audenaert said: "A real form of idol worship exists around a number of these figures. That is not without its dangers." He suggests a "protective circle" be built around them, no matter what the financial cost may be.

He had ordered a report after the recent war in Lebanon, and found that there was a continued radicalisation of several parts of the Muslim community. He warned that police were being stretched to the limits of their capability. He said: "We are doing everything possible to prevent an attack. Up until now, the government has had an ear for our complaints. We have received extra staff and resources. They are being used optimally. We enjoy in Belgium the highest regard from our foreign colleagues. But we are gradually reaching the limits of our capabilities. We have to constantly start new investigations and we can't deal with them with priority."

He claims that he is against polarisation between various communities as it will lead to violence ultimately. He said: "The more resistance, the more radicalisation and the less amount of control. And if you lose control, you get attacks."
