Denmark: Nine Muslims Arrested In Terror Raids
News from Copenhagen Post and the BBC relates that nine Muslim men, all apparently under 30 years of age, were arrested in raids last night in the Danish city of Odense, the third largest connurbation in the country.
The men were arrested on suspicion of being about to launch a terror attack. The individuals had been under surveillance for some months prior to the arrests. Lars Findsen, the director of the Police Intelligence Service (PET) said: "We've made the arrests for this case now, because it can be difficult to know precisely how far the suspects have gotten in their preparations."
Lene Espersen, Denmark's Justice Minister, confirmed: "The clues police found indicate that they were very likely planning an attack somewhere in Denmark. It was the most serious matter I have had in my time as justice minister. Police went in and stopped the group as it was preparing an attack."
Lars Findsen stated that the arrests took place in the suburb of Vollsmose, and said that the men "had acquired material... to build explosives in connection with the preparation of a terror act.....With the general terror situation, the Danish Security Intelligence Service didn't want to run any unnecessary risk."
He did not specify the supposed target or targets which the individuals were planning to attack.
The men will have been at a preliminary court hearing today. They are being held under Denmark's comparatively new terror laws, which were introduced after 9/11.
