Bosnia: Fifty Islamist Sympathizers Lose Citizenship
News from AKI states that Bosnian authorities have taken action against 50 foreign residents, revoking their citizenship because of suspected links to al-Qaeda.
An official, Vjekoslav Vukovic, announced today that these will be deported. There are 350 more cases currently under investigation. Vukovic is president of a commission which has been charged to probe the citizenship rights which were granted to aliens during the 1992-5 civil war.
He said to Sarajevo media: "Among them are people who are on the United Nations list as supporters of Al-Qaeda, as well as people for whom we have data linking them to terrorist activities."
The individuals who are having citizenship revoked are mainly from Asia and Africa. Many foreigners came to Bosnia during the war to act as Mujahideen mercenaries. Some of these who were granted rights of residence have since been holding terror camps, and encouraging Bosnian youth into radical Islam.
In all, about 1,500 cases of such citizenship will be examined. Vukovic said he will be examining how these arrivals signed the naturalisation documents.
A lawyer, Kadrija Kolic, has said he will appeal to the EU and other international groups, saying the actions deny the Islamists' human rights.
