Turkey: Man Kills Imam In Mosque, Is Lynched By Worshippers
News from Deutsche Presse Agentur via Monsters & Critics and the Raw Story, and from Associated Press via International Herald Tribune and from the Sofia News Agency reports that a savage attack upon the imam of a mosque took place this morning in Istanbul, Turkey.
The attack took place at a mosque in Fatih district in the city, where a 27-year old man shouting "Allah" rushed at the imam, slammed his head into the mihrab or prayer niche, and stabbed him in the heart with a knife. Then worshippers who had gathered for morning prayers at the mosque lynched the assailant, killing him.
Papers found on the corpse of the attacker showed he was from Kahta, in the south-eastern region of Turkey, where Kurds predominate. Recently Kurdish separatists of the PKK have been bombing tourist resorts in Turkey. No motive has yet been put forward to explain the man's actions.
The imam at the Ismailaga Mosque, 54-year old Bayram Ali Ozturk, died in hospital. The mosque, and the hospital where the preacher died, have been sealed off by Turkish police.
