Belgium: University Course For Muslim Clerics

News from Expatica states that a Catholic university in Belgium, has announced that it will be holding courses for Muslim imams in the upcoming academic year. The Catholic University of Louvain (UCL) will give the training with the Facultés Universitaires Saint-Louis and the Haute Ecole Galilée, and the French-speaking Belgian taxpayer will be footing the bill.

The French Community's Education Miniser, Marie-Dominique Simonet, has set aside 300,000 Euros ($385,005) for training.

Currently there are private initiatives which offer training to imams in Belgium. Four of these are in the French-speaking regions, and In Flemish regions the Erasmus College gives tuition to techers of Islam. In Ghent, the Dutch-funded Islamic University of Europe will open its doors next year.

The UCL has stopped short of opening an Islamic faculty. The course will not lead to any recognisable academic degree. Felice Dassetto from UCL said: "This pilot project gives permanent training to imams, to Islamic teachers, to responsible people from society."

Meanwhile, one of Belgium's most well-known Muslims (pictured left) has had his request for bail denied, states Expatica. Moroccan-born Abdallah Ait Oud has been remanded into custody for three months by a court in Liège yesterday. Ait Oud is the prime suspect behind the murder of two young girls from the town, Stacy Lemmens and her step-sister Nathalie Mahy. Abdallah Ait Oud is a convicted paedophile, who raped two girls, one of whom was his niece. He had been freed from a mental hospital in December last year.

As he left the court, Ait Oud said to journalists: "Find the culprits". After his client was led away to spend time in Lantin jail, lawyer Jean-Dominique Franchimot confirmed that fibers from a blanket belonging to Ait Oud had been found on the clothing of the two girls, as well as upon his client.

The tragedy of the two girls is made more sad by the knowledge that they had been neglected, allowed to play outside a bar unattended at 1 am on June 10, the night they disappeared. Their guardian, Catherine Dizier (mother of Nathalie) was inside getting drunk with Thierry, (father of Stacy). The girls' disappearance was not announced until 3 am. The prime suspect was Abdallah Aid Out, who had been seen in the vicinity at the time, apparently covered in mud, according to an account in the Flemish paper, De Standard. Posters were put out showing his face, and he turned himself in to police on June 13. He had shaved his head to avoid being recognised. He also had scratches on him.

The bodies of the two little girls were discovered in a sewer beside a railway line on June 28, not far from the bar where their two guardians had neglected them. A post mortem showed that both girls had been strangled to death. Blonde Nathalie Mahy, aged 10, had been sexually assaulted prior to death. Her 7-year old step-sister Stacy's parents had been previously convicted for child neglect. Perhaps if her father and Nathalie's mother had been more observant, the two children would be alive today. The killer may have had an accomplice, still at large.
