Germany: Islamist Bombs - Or A Hoax?
On Monday (31 July) a bomb was discovered on a German train, stated Deutsche Presse-Agentur via Expatica. The device, hidden inside a luggage bag, was defused in the main railway station in Dortmund, West Germany, on Monday evening.
The bomb was real enough - containing a canister of propane, timer and wires. Prosecutor Ina Holznagel stated: "The contents were capable of severely injuring or even killing people".
No group or individual has yet claimed responsibility for the bombs, and calls have been made for increased CCTV at stations.
Later, it was disclosed that a second bomb had been found at the same time, which was dismantled at Koblenz, and was of a similar design. A spokesman from the federal prosecutor's office confirmed that a bag of edible starch had been found inside one of the bombs.
It was suggested by news service Focus Online that the bomber had wanted the powder to disperse, to resemble anthrax and create panic, but the prosecutor would not hazard a guess at the reason for the starch being present.
Today, DPA via Expatica states that a news report has maintained that one of the bombs found on Monday contained packaging from Lebanon.
The newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung had stated that in one bag containing a bomb, there had been found a plastic bag with Arabic script and a Beirut address.
Ullrich Schultheis, federal prosecutions spokesman said: "When assessing supposed or genuine clues, it has to be remembered that they might have been put there to mislead the investigation."
Focus Online has stated that the bombs did not detonate because there was too much gas in the canisters. The prosecutor's office has refused to comment on this claim.
So there is still uncertainty, and while passengers are cautious while traveling by train, there are no clear statements coming from the authorities.

Something fishy is going on with this story. Did they try to hold back the info so as not to spook other members who may be involved?
