US: Muslim Financier Of Charity Linked To Hamas Is Freed
The man pictured right is Abdel Jabbar Hamdan. Born in a Palestinian refugee camp in 1960, he came to the US in 1979, marrying a Palestinian woman in 1983. A president of the Anaheim mosque and the West Coast Islamic Society, he worked as a fundraiser for the Holy Land Foundation in the early 1990s.
This organization, founded in 1989, was shut down on December 4 2001 shortly after 9/11, with the assets of its offices in Texas, California, New Jersey and Illinois seized. It later became placed on a list of US Specially Designated Terrorist Organizations, because of the money it had channelled into Hamas.
According to the Anti Defamation League, this charity was given a 42-count indictment by the U.S. Justice Department in July 2004. Between 1995 and 2001 it had given, according to the indictment, $12.4 million to individuals and groups linked to Hamas. It became "incorporated" in 1992, and had raised $57 million, but had only reported $36.2 million to the IRS.
Its co-founder Shukri Abu Baker has been widely linked to the organisation Hamas. The Holy Land Foundation also helped to fund the organisation CAIR (Council on American Islamic Relations).
On July 27, 2004, the same day the HLF became outlawed, the home of Abdel Jabbar Hamdan was raided by FBI agents. He was taken into custody, where he has remained since, without being allowed out on bail bond. Other leaders of HLF who were placed in custody have since been released.
Today, according to Associated Press via MSNBC, a US District Judge in Los Angeles, Terry Hatter, ordered that Hamdan be released without bond.
Hamdan had been held on immigration charges, with a recommendation for deportation made in August 2004. His wife has six children.
