Sweden: Reflections on the Suicide of the West

Mark Steyn points to a story which has been floating around the internet, which now has been confirmed enough to make serious commentary (emphasis mine): Sweden's suicide note

Fjordman at Gates of Vienna says he has confirmed from independent sources that Jens Orback, Democracy Minister (!) in the Swedish government, said during a radio debate: "We must be open and tolerant towards Islam and Muslims because when we become a minority, they will be so towards us."

Let's hit rewind and play that again.

"We must be open and tolerant towards Islam and Muslims because when we become a minority, they will be so towards us."

Mr. Steyn in his sidebar comments:

Jens Orback, Democracy Minister in Stockholm, confirms that Europe's death wish is no longer accident but official policy. I know the Swedes have a reputation for being suicidal, but you'd think they'd find a less painful way.

And I wonder, why would certain Swedes be so accepting of civilizational suicide?

It is not a matter of genetics, or of reputation, as Mr. Steyn suggest in jest. It is a matter of ideology. Ideas govern our actions, better than the most dedicated tyrant. Mr. Orback appears to be a slave.

Sweden's Democracy Minister appears to be a slave to Democracy. He sees nothing inherently wrong with a majority oppressing another: that's why he doesn't foresee an struggle against a Muslim majority bent on oppressing and ultimately destroying a non-Muslim minority: a true believer in Democracy, "the rule of the majority", would have nothing else to say beyond, "let's be good to them now so perhaps they'll be good to us tomorrow."

Mr. Orbeck apparently sees no values worth defending in his own civilization. He has chosen to believe there is nothing inherently good in Western Civlization, and that there are many things inherently bad. That is the true meaning of the misnamed multiculturalist worldview: it is not that all cultures are equally good, but that all cultures are equally good, except for Western Civilization, which is imperialist, warmonger, exploitative, and responsible for the perceived faults of all other cultures. It is not surprising somebody raised to believe such garbage would choose not to fight for his own culture and way of life.

Mr. Orbeck also seems to believe in a utopian human nature. That's why he believes "being nice" to Muslims would overrule fourteen centuries of Muslim murder, rape, and conquest. He thinks anyone--except for those ghastly "islamophobes"--can be conquered by kindness. This is an expression of hope, not a coherent, let alone correct vision of what human beings are and how they act. It is a dangerous delusion, which should be rejected as the moral poison it really is.

To conclude: people like Jans Orbeck, if left in power, will be the death of us. They, and vastly more importantly, their ideas, should be rejected. Time is running out. It is time to start.
