Spain: Guantanamo Muslim To Sue The US Government
We reported on July 24 that a Spanish national, Hamed Abderrahman Ahmed (pictured), who had been imprisoned in Guantanamo and was subsequently sentenced by the Madrid National Court to six years' jail, was freed by the Spanish Supreme Court.
Ahmed had been originally detained in Pakistan in 2001 and taken to Guantanamo. In February 2004 he was extradited back to Spain and kept in jail until he was granted bail on July 13, four months later. On October 5 last year, he had been sentenced to six years' jail for being a member of Al Qaeda.
Hamed Abderrahman Ahmed, who is known as the "Spanish Taliban" was freed on the 24 July. The presiding judge said that there had been "a total absence of proof that the defendant was a member of Islamic terrorist group Al Qaeda." The court also ruled that his right to the presumption of innocence had been denied.
Today, Expatica reports that Ahmed is planning to sue the US government for compensation.
He told a press conference that he was very happy to be free again and that he intends to earn a living as a truck driver.
On Guantanamo, the 31-year old said: "We slept in cages of two metres by one like they use for animals with a sheet, a blanket and a towel as our only utensils."
As well as planning to sue the United States government, Ahmed's lawyer said that he was considering a legal complaint against the National Court in Madrid, for the was it dealt with the case.
The lawyer said his client had never been a member of Al Qaeda, but had gone to study religion at a madrassa. He had been arrested whilst "fleeing the bombing in Afghanistan".
