Sweden: Malmo Muslims Compare Jews To Nazis
Sweden is once again going flaccid on issues where it should be hard. A recent demonstration took place in Malmo, where there is a high concentration of Muslims. The protest was against the current situation in Lebanon, and demonstrators carryied placards. One placard compared the swastika to the Star of David.
The demonstration was run by the Palestinian Association of Malmo, a group which gets subsidies from the Swedish taxpayer. The Muslims of Malmo are protected under law by a crime called "Agitation Against Minority Groups". But it appears their supporters do not mind doing a spot of anti-semitic agitation of their own.
The prosecutors' office in Malmo has been sending out confused messages on this matter, states The Local. On Friday, duty prosecutor Mats Svensson said such placards were not illegal, while yesterday, the chief prosecutor Sven-Erik Alhem said that even at a demonstration, a display of the swastika disrespected Jews as a minority group.
Another Malmo prosecutor, Bo Albrektsson, had earlier claimed: "Political demonstrations should be allowed some lee-way."
There have been two complaints concerning alleged "agitation" at the protest, with one from a member of the public, and another from the police.
Iva Parizkova Ryggestahl, a Liberal councillor, has called for the Palestinian Association to have its subsidies curtailed. The association, for its part, denied any responsibility.
On Saturday in a central Stockholm park, another demonstration against Israel's actions in Lebanon led to rioting, with two people arrested following clashes with police. Several hundred protesters, who had marched to the Israeli embassy, hurled stones and other objects at police.
According to a discussion thread, four people were arrested for attacking police outside the Israeli and US embassies.
