Thailand: Muslim Insurgents "Execute" Teacher In Front Of Students
We noted on July 22 that Muslim insurgents had threatened to kidnap teachers in Rueso district in Narathiwat province, in the south of Thailand.
The threats against teachers were made in retaliation for the arrest of four militants named a "wanted" list , which happened on Thursday July 20 in Ban Salo village in Rueso district.
Today, Islamists killed a teacher in the district, while he was leading a class. He died while still clutching a piece of chalk in his hand. The news is carried by Deutsche Presse-Agentur via the Khaleej Times and also by TNA English News.
48-year old Prasarn Makchu was teaching his class in Ban Muaraeng school at 11.00 am local time when militants entered the school. He was shot twice in the head and once in the chest by an insurgent who was dressed in school uniform. Prasam died instantly, while his students looked on.
In Nongjik district, Pattani province yesterday, a 60-year old school janitor was shot dead, states TNA English News. Jit Puangpura, janitor of Pathumkongka School, was killed at 10,30 am by two gunmen riding a motorcycle. Mr Jit, a defense volunteer, was riding his motorcycle, with his wife riding pillion. His wife was wounded in the incident and taken to hospital.
In Bannang Sata district in Yala province, around 9.30 am on Sunday, the house of a 44-year old fruit trader was shot at by insurgents riding a motorcycle. The house, which belonged to Narong Songlee, and two vehicles were damaged, but no-one was hurt.
The Songkhlanagarin (Prince of Songhkla) Hospital issued its 65th press release concerning the health of Ms Juling Pongkinmul, a Buddhist teacher who was beaten into a coma by a Muslim mob. The mob had attacked her and Ms Sirinat Thawornsuk on May 19 at Gujinruepo village in Ragae district in Narathiwat province.
The hospital report states that Ms Juling is still unconscious and unable to breathe by herself. The medical team are trying to keep her pulse at a normal rate to monitor her brain responses.
The southern provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, as well as two districts of Songhkla province, formerly comprised an independent Muslim sultanate called Pattani. Thailand invaded the region in 1786, and the provinces became officially annexed into Thailand in 1902. The population in these provinces is 80% Muslim, and 20% Buddhist.
Since January 4 2004, an insurgency has been carried out by Muslim separatists, who wish to see the southern region secede from Thailand. Almost 1,400 people have died in the violence so far. Recently, the majority of victims of this violence seem to be Muslims themselves, individuals judged to be "collaborators" with the Thai authorities.
