France: Paris Mosque To Sue Over Cartoons Of Mohammed

CharlieHebdo.jpgThe image at left is now the subject of a court case, which will commence in September, according to Dow Jones Newswires and France-Echos (the French edition; the English language editor is doing his exams this week - good luck!).

The satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has always had a reputation for ribald humour and savage attacks on politicians and cultural icons, but its cover depiction of Mo moaning, and its reproduction within of three of the infamous Danish cartoons was too much for the Mosquee de Paris.

On Monday, 17 July they filed a suit against Philippe Val, editor of Charlie-Hebdo, and also Rotatives publishing house. The suit claims that by publishing the images, they committed "a deliberate act of aggression aimed at offending people of the Muslim religion in their attachment to their faith."

The cover of the edition illustrated has the legend: "Mohammed Overwhelmed by the Fundamentalists." Mo is saying: "It's tough being loved by idiots." The word "con" means both "idiot" and "cunt". The edition appeared in February this year, while fundamentalist Muslims were showing their commitment to peace and freedom of speech with acts of vandalism and murder.

Five Muslim organisations had sought to prevent Charlie-Hebdo from publishing the pictures in February, but a court threw out the claim because it had not been properly registered with the public prosecutor's office.

Jacques Lefranc, editor of France-Soir, had been fired by the Egyptian owner of the paper, Raymond Lakah, for reproducing the Danish images.

At the time of the publication, Philippe Val had justified printing three cartoons of Mohammed by citing the issue of press freedom, stating that he was acting in solidarity with Jyllands-Posten, which first commissioned the images, and Jacques Lefranc.

Jeff74b at France-Echos lists some of the less savoury aspects of the prophet Mohammed, which blatantly contradict the notion of the "positive role model" which the owners of the Mosque of Paris are attempting to propagate by launching such a suit.

Jeff mentions Mohammed's penchant for caravan-raiding, and at Medina his slaughtering of Jews and others who disagreed with him, such as poets, a hundred-year old man, a mother of five children, a friend of his family, and a woman who did not believe in him.

He mentions Mohammed's war crimes, and other examples of poor morality, such as his sexual abuse of a child:

Tabari Hadith: IX:131: (Aisha narrated) "My mother came to me while I was being swung on a swing between two branches and got me down. My nurse wiped my face with some water and started leading me. When I was at the door she stopped so I could catch my breath. I was then brought in while the Messenger was sitting on a bed in our house. My mother made me sit on his lap. Then the men and women got up and left. The Prophet consummated his marriage with me in my house when I was nine years old."

Our special celebratory Mohammed cartoon of this disgustingly perverse event in the so-called prophet's life can be found here.

The France-Echos article calls Mohammed a "gigolo, a coward, a pedophile, a crook, an assassin, a mafia don, a thief, an enslaver, a rapist, a false prophet, an opportunist without scruples, a sexual obsessive, a war criminal, a paranoiac serial killer, a vicious and twisted spirit, a machiavellian traitor, chief of a band of brigands".

Jeff suggests that his French readers take a print of his article, and then send them to the owners of the Paris Mosque at 5, Place Puit de l'Ermite, 75005 Paris.

All of those attributes are supported by Muslim scripture. If the Koran, the Hadith, and the Sunna are allowed into evidence, the magazine should win the suit. It looks to me they didn't do much satire as reported the plain truth.
