Italy: Five Algerian Muslims Arrested

AKI reports that today, five Algerian nationals were arrested, accused of being members of the Islamist terror group the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC).

The arrests came as a result of raids carried out in Veneto and Lombardy in the north of the country, and at the city of Reggio Emilia in central Italy.

The five are said to belong to a terror ring located in Venice, and operated nationally, financing GSPC and recruiting militants to send to Algeria and Iraq.

The members of the group were also charged with foging identification papers and residence permits for use by illegal immigrants.

Guiliano Amato, Italy's interior minister, said that the raids were significant as members of the team "were ready to reach Algeria and Iraq in an operational role."
