US: British Muslim Indicted On Terror Charges

Ahmad"News from the BBC, from Associated Press via CNN, MSNBC, Connecticut Post and Federal News Radio states that another man has now been indicted on charges of fundraising of terrorism charges.

The man, 26-year old Syed Talha Ahsan, aged 26, was arrested at his home in Tooting yesterday, after a federal indictment was opened against him in Connecticut, USA.

Ahsan is accused in the same case as Babar Ahmad (pictured). We reported that Ahmad appeared in Bow Street Magistrates Court on July 13 via a video link. He was, with Haroon Rashid Aswat, fighting extradition to the United States, a battle he has fought for two years.

The case for Ahmad's extradition has still not been resolved, and while his case drags on and on, Bow Street Magistrates Court has shut up shop and closed for business, after 271 years. The same court which handled the trials of Oscar Wilde and Dr Crippen was unable to finish the case of two Islamists who have overwhelming evidence suggesting that they should be placed on trial in the United States.

Babar Ahmad, aged 31, has been indicted on charges of supporting terrorism, conspiring to kill Americans, and maintaining a website used to fund terrorists. He has been in custody in the UK since he was arrested on August 2004. He ran several websites, which were used to recruit terrorists. The most important of these was Azzam.com, which recruited people for al-Qaeda, the Taliban and Chechen Islamist separatist organisations. The website also supplied gas masks, night-vision goggles and camouflage clothing.

Ahmad is being held in Woodhill prison, and his father has mounted a campaign to have him freed. Ahmad himself is self-righteous, stating last year when told he could be extradited: "This decision should only come as a surprise to those who thought that there was still justice for Muslims in Britain. I entrust my affairs to Allah and His Words from the Quran."

His wife Maryam had said the decision was a political one, and would further alienate the Muslim community.

Despite all the bravado expressed on Ahmad's websites, glorifying murder and jihad against Americans and Russians, he is too cowardly to accept the extradition and face his trial like a man.

Ahmad lived in Tooting, like Syed Talha Ahsan. The indictment against Ahsan is virtually identical to that made against Ahmad. Ahsan's indictment was made from Connecticut, as one of the websites which the pair ran was operated from this state. Other websites were hosted in Nevada, Britain, Ireland and Malaysia.

Ahmad had been indicted from Connecticut in October 2004.

Ahsan is also charged with setting up terrorists in temporary housing in Britain, and shortly before 9/11, 2001, owned a classified US Navy document which revealed troop movements. Ahsan and Ahmad are alleged by prosecutors to have run their pro-jihadist websites from 1998 to 2002.

Ahsan appeared at Horseferry Road Magistrates this afternoon, and was remanded in custody without access to bail. He is now being held in a central London police station.

Connecticut district attorney Kevin O'Connor said: "These charges are the result of several years of investigative work by ICE and FBI agents in New Haven, NCIS agents, and several additional law enforcement partners here in the United States and overseas."

Ahsan and Ahmad are said to have assisted jihadist fighters to gain entry to conflict regions such as Afghanistan and Chechnya.
