Canada: Islamist Terror Suspect Gets Bail
We reported on June 13 that a sixteen-year old youth, one of five young people who had been arrested on June 2 with 12 adults, was seeking bail at an Ontario court.
That youth will have to wait until July 24 to know the decision of Justice Gary Trotter, the judge in his case, who is also an expert on Canadian bail regulations.
However, on Friday, another of the accused youths was released on Friday, state CTV.ca and the Calgary Sun.
This youth, who is now aged 18, was 17 at the time of his arrest, so his name cannot be disclosed under Canada's Youth Criminal Justice Act. His lawyer, Gary Grill, said: "He was obviously -- to all who were present -- very relieved. He slumped down in the prisoner's box when he heard it."
The bail conditions are secret, but Grill confirmed that "at all times authorities will know where my client is."
The court heard two and a half days of evidence before Justice of the Peace Katherine Jensen granted bail. There is a publication ban, meaning that all events inside the bail hearing cannot be reported.
The 18 year old, sporting a full beard, white T-shirt and sweat pants, was handed over to his family at around 4 pm Friday. The youth is charged with two counts of attending a terrorist training camp.
More details have emerged of the role played by Mubin Shaikh, the cleric who outed himself as an "agent provocateur" employed by the CSIS and RCMP to entrap the 17 individuals who are charged with terrorism offenses.
The Telegraph reports that Shaikh set up a training camp in a field in the village of Washago, Ontario, where young Muslims dressed up in camouflage, used guns in target practice and made a video to recruit others for jihad.
The wife of Zakaria Amara, one of the 17 accused individuals is not a happy bunny. Nada Farooq said of Shaikh Mubin: "I know this man. May Allah curse him and make him suffer."
