India: More Tourists Attacked By Kashmir Islamists

We reported that on July 11 eight tourists were killed in Jammu & Kashmir state, India. They were the victims of grenade attacks in and around Srinigar. Many tourists from West Bengal go to the scenic Lake Dal for their holidays. An earlier grenade attack on tourists there, on May 31 killed 21 people.

Since this Tuesday's attack, another person has died, bringing the toll to nine. 39 others were injured in those attacks. Yesterday, states Agence France Presse via the Pakistan Daily Times, Islamists struck again.

Three tourists from New Delhi and three from Jammu & Kashmir were injured in a grenade attack in the nearby resort of Gulmarg. The grenade was thrown as the tourists were boarding a bus. The injured were taken to Srinigar hospital, where one of the victims was said to be in a serious condition.

A police officlal has stated that one of those assumed to be responsible for Tuesday's attacks has been killed. The official said: "We've shot dead a top operative of Lashkar-e-Taiba in (southern) Anantnag town ... (and) are investigating whether he had a role."

The man has been identified as Qari Anas, a Pakistan national. He was killed yesterday as police raided a rebel hideout, following a tip-off from a man who had been arrested in Srinigar. Their informant was caught by taxi drivers as he tried to throw a grenade into a taxi on Tuesday, and handed over to police. He has confessed to throwing a grenade.

Lashkar-e-Taiba (Lashkar-e-Toiba, or LeT) has officially denied the Srinigar attacks on Tuesday, and have disassociated themselves from the arrested grenade-thrower. The same group, whose name means "soldiers of the pure", also denied responsibility for the attacks on trains in Mumbai on Tuesday. The death toll for the Mumbai train bombing is now standing at 186.

Indian police claim they shot dead another LeT operative in Doda district, Jammu & Kashmir, south of Anantang. They have offered a reward of 500,000 rupees ($10, 850) for the capture of another LeT militant, said to be the mastermind of the Srinigar grenade assaults.

LeT was responsible for the triple bombing at New Delhi on October 29, which killed 59 people, even though it had initially denied responsibility. It is one of at least a dozen groups committed to using terror to force Jammu & Kashmir state to cede from India.
