India: Islamists Attack Tourists In Kashmir - Eight Dead

Before the devastating attacks upon train carriages in Mumbai, another terrorist incident happened in India. In five locations near Srinigar, Jammu & Kashmir state, grenades were thrown at tourists, killing eight people, states AKI. The incidents happened at Dal Lake, besides the Tourist Reception Centre and in the marketplaces of Regal Chowk, Aabi Guzar and Lal Chowk, and happened across a time period of three hours.

Amongst the dead were four women, from Kolkata (Calcutta), Hyderabad and Bihar. More than 30 were wounded. The dead included two brothers from Hyderabad and their mother.

The state tourism minister, Naeem Akhter said: "These were attacks directly made at tourists and are condemnable." There have been calls for an independent inquiry, as all groups, even militants officially condemn such attacks, yet the attacks do not stop.

The death toll may rise, due to the poor condition of some of the wounded. At 11.50 am local time, as a minibus drew up to an intersection at Dal Gate, on its way to the picturesque Dal Lake, and filled with Bengali holidaymakers, assailants tossed a grenade inside the bus.

A police official said: "The grenade exploded with a bang inside the vehicle, causing fatal injuries to four persons, including three women."

We wrote of a similar incident, at the same location, on May 31 when hand grenades were tossed through the windows of two buses. 21 people had died.

After the bus attack, there were subsequent explosions at the markets, and then at the tourism centre.

A youth who had tried to throw a grenade into a taxi was captured by other drivers, and handed over to police, who are questioning him. The youth has been identified as Muhammad Afzal Rather, who lived locally.
