Saudi Arabia: Macho Muslims - Real Men Don't Make Sweets
News from Arab News reports that there are problems in Saudi Arabia for manufacturers of confectionery. New regulations in Saudi Arabia introduced by the Labour Ministry, designed to positively discriminate in favour of Saudi employees, have meant that factories must not employ non-Saudis.
And for Ali Muhammad Saaduddin, the owner and C.E.O. of Saaduddin Sweets, this has meant that his business is suffering, because Saudi men cannot cope with the notion of making candy, as it is considered a job for "sissies".
Saaduddin says: "In order to meet the percentage specified by the Saudiazation decision, we have faced a lot of difficulties. We've hired many Saudis but they really cannot do the job. Some of them have walked out and others simply don't know how to make sweets."
But Saudi women appear to enjoy the job. So in desperation, Ali Muhammad Saaduddin has applied to the Saudi Women's Development Committee in Riyadh, in an attempt to recruit about 80 women. To accommodate the hoped-for influx of women, he states his factory has a gender-segregated area for women where they can work without the presence of males.
Now, look in the mirror, and say "Candyman" three times....

I hope more businesses will at least employ women in segregated office spaces so women can have more opportunities for employment opened to them.
