Bangladesh: Nine Suspected Islamists Arrested

News from China People's Daily and the Bangladesh Daily Star, Bangladesh Web and the New Agerelates that two Pakistani nationals and seven Bangla nationals were arrested in the south of Jhalakathi town, 160 miles south of Dhaka, the capital.

The individuals who were picked up claim to be members of the Muslim proselytizing group called Dawate Islami ("invitation to Islam"). Eight individuals had arrived at Jhalakathi and had taken sheltered at the Gorosthan Mosque, which lies near Jhalakathi District Jail. The men all wore similar costumes.

The khadem of the mosque became suspicious, and contacted the authorities. The public prosecutor advocate, Haider Hossain, spoke to the men, and found that their stories about who they were and why they were there seemed unsatisfactory. They were arrested at 8 pm local time Friday.

The man who went to meet them, Kazi Nazrul Islam of Barisal, was also arrested when he arrived.

Initially the men claimed to be followers of "Kaderia Tarika" a religious group which has followers from neighbouring Barisal district, whose "Pir" (spiritual master) is based in Chittagong, but these individuals claimed to be followers of a Pir Yusuf Aktari of Punjab, Pakistan.

Islamic books, stickers and "household utensils" were taken from the men, who are now on a seven day remand.
