Somalia: Islamists Attack Wedding Party For Playing "Satanic" Music
A further sign that the Supreme Islamic Council of Somalia is attempting to turn Somalia into a Taliban-styled nation comes from a report by Agence France Presse via News.com.au.
Earlier this afternoon, Islamist militia loyal to the Islamic courts raided a wedding party in Huriwa district in Mogadishu, where a wedding party was taking place. About 20 militia entered the house, fired shots in the air and said that the band which was playing was performing "satanic" music, which was against Islamic teachings.
Hayir Ali Roble, one of the musicians said: "We were ordered to stop the music and empty the house which we all complied with immediately. We followed their orders and kept our musical instruments in a room but they forcefully entered the house and took the instruments, and in the process broke some of them."
They also beat a woman from the party with sticks.
The party had been organised by Khadijo Weheliye for her son. She said: "We didn't know what their aim was because we had asked the Islamic court for permission to hold the party. They gave us a permission letter this morning, but attacked our home in the afternoon."
The Islamic courts confirmed that they had raided the party, and that they had confiscated the musical instruments, but denied that a woman was beaten in the process. Ali Salad is head of the Ridwan Islamic courts in Huriwa neighbourhood.
Salad said: "We have told them to stop evil acts that derail the practice of Sharia law and it is our duty to enforce the ban on band music. We confiscated musical instruments that are satanic simply because we have previously told party organisers not to bring bands with music at the party."
With an edict issued on Wednesday threatening death for not praying five times a day, and with certain regions, such as Huriwa, having bans on cinemas showing soccer footage, western or Indian movies, life for Somalis is certainly going to be devoid of pleasures or entertainment.
